The National Authority for Remote Sensing Supports Innovative Graduation Projects of Cairo University Students

The National Authority for Remote Sensing hosted the discussions of graduation projects from the Surveying, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and Remote Sensing Program at the Faculty of Arts, Cairo University. The event provided a platform for students to present innovative ideas that bridge academic knowledge with practical applications.

In recognition of the students’ efforts, the Authority announced the launch of specialized training grants for outstanding graduates, reflecting its commitment to nurturing young talents and empowering them to contribute to the scientific and technological fields.

Over the past summer, the Authority has also implemented free training programs for more than 1,500 students, offering them hands-on experience in remote sensing technologies and geospatial sciences.

Highlighting the importance of these initiatives, Dr. Islam Abu Al-Magd, President of the Authority, stressed that graduation projects are not merely academic exercises but play a vital role in advancing sustainable development goals. “From university to reality, students’ projects are now finding their way into real-world applications, opening new horizons for the future of research and innovation,” he said.

Through these efforts, the National Authority for Remote Sensing continues to strengthen its partnership with universities and reinforce its role as a bridge between scientific research and societal needs.

Dr. Mona Younis expressed her pride in the students and the creative projects they presented, noting that the Training Division will continue to support young people and equip them with the skills needed to enter the labor market.

The National Authority for Remote Sensing and Space Sciences hosted the graduation project discussions for fourth-year students from the Faculty of Arts, Cairo University (Surveying, Geographic Information Systems, and Remote Sensing Program). The event was held as part of the Authority’s ongoing cooperation with Egyptian universities to promote practical training, enhance students’ skills, and align higher education outcomes with labor market demands.

Prof. Dr. Islam Abu Al-Magd, President of the Authority, emphasized that the students’ projects represent both scientific and practical value, addressing critical topics that contribute to advancing sustainable development in Egypt and across the region.

The event was attended by a distinguished panel of examiners, including:

·       Prof. Dr. Ashraf Khaled Helmy, Vice President of the Authority for Research Affairs and Head of the Data Reception and Analysis Division.

·       Prof. Dr. Elham Mahmoud Ali, Professor of Environment and Marine Sciences.

·       Prof. Dr. Ahmed Hassan Ibrahim Hassan, Professor of Urban Geography, Faculty of Arts – Cairo University.

·       Associate Prof. Dr. Khaled Abdel-Salam Ali, Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Information Technology – Misr University for Science and Technology.

·       Prof. Dr. Alaa El-Din Abdallah Yassin, Head of the Information Systems Department – Misr University for Science and Technology.

·       Dr. Enas Ahmed Mahmoud Farghaly, Lecturer of Geomorphology, Remote Sensing, and GIS, Faculty of Girls – Ain Shams University.

·       Prof. Dr. Abdel Aziz Belal, Vice President of the Authority for Administrative Affairs.

The President of the Authority explained that these projects are not merely academic exercises, but rather practical models that can support decision-makers in key areas such as monitoring environmental changes, managing water resources, urban planning, and tracking agricultural activities through artificial intelligence and remote sensing technologies.

He added that the Authority firmly believes in investing in the minds of young people and is committed to providing opportunities for students to gain practical training and specialized expertise. This year’s projects, he emphasized, reflect a remarkable level of creativity and an outstanding ability to apply modern technologies in service of society.

The event was also attended by distinguished professors and experts who served as jury members from various universities and research institutions, alongside the Vice Presidents of the Authority. They commended the scientific quality of the projects and the impressive capabilities demonstrated by the students.

It is worth noting that these projects benefited from exceptional academic supervision by Dr. Mona Younis, Head of the Training Division at the Authority; Dr. Ahmed Hassan, former Dean of the Faculty of Arts; Dr. Adly Anis, Coordinator of the Surveying, GIS, and Remote Sensing Program and Director of the Faculty and Leadership Development Center at Cairo University; and Engineer Omar Ashraf, Field Training Coordinator for the projects at the Authority.

At the conclusion of the event, the Authority announced special training grants for outstanding students whose graduation projects demonstrated excellence. The initiative aims to further enhance their scientific and practical skills in remote sensing and space sciences, while offering them opportunities to acquire unique hands-on experience through the Authority’s specialized training programs.

Dr. Mona Younis, Head of the Training Division at the Authority, commented: “We are proud of our students and the creative projects they have delivered, which reflect sincere effort and solid scientific knowledge. The Training Division will always remain a strong supporter of every initiative that contributes to preparing a new generation capable of competing in the labor market locally and regionally.”

She also noted that the Authority organized a free training program during the summer vacation for university students, in which more than 1,500 students from various Egyptian universities—and even from some sisterly Arab countries—participated this year.

For his part, Dr. Ahmed Hassan affirmed that the students’ work represents a successful model of integration between the university and the Authority, praising both the students’ commitment and the supervisors’ efforts, which were clearly reflected in the high quality of the projects.

Dr. Adly Anis stressed that such fruitful cooperation would not have been possible without the strong support of Prof. Dr. Islam Abu Al-Magd, President of the Authority, who places students at the top of his priorities and firmly believes in investing in the minds of young people as the leaders of the future.

This activity comes as part of the Authority’s strategy and the Training Division’s ongoing scientific and professional development programs, which aim to spread the culture and technology of remote sensing and space sciences, while building human capacities both locally and regionally.

At the closing session, the winning graduation projects were announced and their creators were honored. The first prize went to the project “Machine Learning and Deep Learning for Analyzing Agricultural Crop Patterns Using Satellite and Radar Imagery,” supervised by Dr. Sayed Abdo and Dr. Hossam Khodr. The second place was awarded to “An Integrated Approach between RUSLE and GIS Using Cloud-Based Geospatial Analysis to Assess Soil Erosion in North Sinai, Egypt,” supervised by Dr. Mohamed El-Adham and Dr. Mona El-Azzouni.

The third prize went to the project “Monitoring and Analyzing Water Bodies in the Nile Basin Using Remote Sensing Technologies: A Case Study on the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam and Lake Nasser,” supervised by Dr. Mohamed Roshdy. Meanwhile, the fourth place was awarded to “Identifying the Optimal Location for a Solar Power Plant in New Valley,” supervised by Dr. Marwa Sayed and Dr. Amira Sobhy.
