Vision
Our vision is to become a center of excellence in Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographic Information System (GIS) Agricultural Applications in Egypt, the region, and across the Globe and develop partnership with industry and society.
Mission
Provide leadership in remote sensing and GIS agricultural applications through research and development, teaching and training, instructions and consultations and mutual research projects. The department aims to enhance the utilization of remote sensing technologies for agricultural applications in Egypt. Supervise the coordination of activities and research projects related to Remote sensing (RS) Geographic Information Systems (GIS) agricultural applications within Egypt. It aims also to increase knowledge and awareness of remote sensing and GIS agricultural applications in all levels of governmental administrations trough training courses, workshops, lectures, and conferences.
Objectives
The Soil Department is focused on using geographic information systems, remote sensing images and radar images in the following:
The horizontal agricultural development
The soil department provides studies on the arable lands in desert areas, which include maps of soil survey and classification, soil capability and crop suitability, and the best alternatives to crops. The department also provides studies on the risks facing agricultural development such as desertification and drought as well as land degradation and etc.,.
The vertical agricultural development
The soil department provides on developing the smart systems to increase the production unit, which depends on focusing on increasing production per unit and based on the application of precision farming technology using ground sensors at the field level.
The department has implemented many national and international projects during the past periods in different regions of the Arab Republic of Egypt, such as the Jellaba Valley project, the New Valley, the Maghra area south of the Qattara depression, the West Matrouh area, Al Alamein and others.

The National Authority for Remote Sensing and Space Sciences (NARSS), founded in the early 1973 as a Remote Sensing Center, is considered the pioneer Egyptian institution that applied satellite remote sensing at a very early stage. The center was declared as an authority in 1992. One of the Main NARSS departments is the Marine and Coastal Sciences Department. The department has several functioning laboratory and research facilities. The experience of the department is unique for using satellite images and GIS in coastal, nearshore and marine studies. Many national and international projects had been carried out successfully for various governmental and non-governmental agencies in Egypt, EU, UNESCO and UNEP. Marine Sciences department has established an Integrated Coastal Management Laboratory (ICML) since year 2000. Five qualified experts are working in the Lab. The department is always ready to assume its responsibilities in giving technical support to planners, decision-makers, marine resource scientists, ecologists and researchers in coastal and marine fields.
Marine Sciences Department Strategy
Development and utilization of remote sensing technologies and GIS and their applications in Marine and Coastal studies and modeling of scientific research, services, and assistance in the formulation of the national policies in Coastal Zone Management.
Marine Sciences Department Activities
The department activities for applications of remote sensing (RS) and geographic information systems (GIS) in studying the coastal and marine ecosystem for the Mediterranean and Red Seas are including the following:
Marine Sciences Department Facilities
The Marine and coastal sciences Department has about 8 staff members, specialists and technicians. Among the major facilities and equipment's available now in the department are:
