Agriculture Applications, Soils, and Marine

Agriculture Applications, Soils, and Marine Departments

Soil Sciences

Agriculture plays an important role in the national income of Egypt. The agricultural area in Egypt is about 6.0 million feddans in addition to about 2.0 million feddans as new reclaimed soil. Agriculture offers the most urgent needs to human being as food, fiber and Clothing. The division provides many important services relevant to agricultural sector as well as land users or individuals. The division also offers many services in the marine field and coastal zone management as well.

Soil Department Strategy

  • Raising the capability of the agricultural sector in Egypt.
  • Strengthen the relationship between agricultural, soil and advanced techniques of remote sensing, GIS.
  • Achieving the fruitful success of using such aforementioned techniques in the agricultural sector.
  • Raising the public awareness on the different revenues that outcome from using remote sensing especially in the production process.
  • Supply training for adults (university and institutes students), who are working in the field of remote sensing and GIS techniques .
  • Increasing the cooperation between narss and other national and international scientific institutes .
  • Dealing with the national plan with new prospect using the advanced and modern techniques.

Soil Department Activities

  •  To identify the agriculture area and changes that may be occurred during different land uses.
  • To recognize the crop productivity.
  • To identify land degradation or desertification as well.
  • To recognize sustainable land use.
  • To sustain soils and national resources
  • To build terrain and soil database

Marine Sciences

The National Authority for Remote Sensing and Space Sciences (NARSS), founded in the early 1973 as a Remote Sensing Center, is considered the pioneer Egyptian institution that applied satellite remote sensing at a very early stage. The center was declared as an authority in 1992. One of the Main NARSS departments is the Marine and Coastal Sciences Department. The department has several functioning laboratory and research facilities. The experience of the department is unique for using satellite images and GIS in coastal, nearshore and marine studies. Many national and international projects had been carried out successfully for various governmental and non-governmental agencies in Egypt, EU, UNESCO and UNEP. Marine Sciences department has established an Integrated Coastal Management Laboratory (ICML) since year 2000. Five qualified experts are working in the Lab. The department is always ready to assume its responsibilities in giving technical support to planners, decision-makers, marine resource scientists, ecologists and researchers in coastal and marine fields.

Marine Sciences Department Strategy

Development and utilization of remote sensing technologies and GIS and their applications in Marine and Coastal studies and modeling of scientific research, services, and assistance in the formulation of the national policies in Coastal Zone Management.

Marine Sciences Department Activities

The department activities for applications of remote sensing (RS) and geographic information systems (GIS) in studying the coastal and marine ecosystem for the Mediterranean and Red Seas are including the following:

  • Integrated Coastal Zone Management Studies
  • Coastal erosion and accretion along the Mediterranean and Red Seas coast.
  • Using Mathematical modeling in the coastal lakes Management.
  • Monitoring and assessing the fisheries resources development.
  • Monitoring and assessing the environmental Hazards versus Coastal Development
  • Assessment of Mangarove forests along the Red Sea coast.
  • Monitoring oil pollution along the Mediterranean Sea.
  • Using IT for building up Coastal Information System for Egypt.
  • Coastal and Inland Lakes and lagoons of Egypt.
  • Climate Change Impact on Coastal Areas.
  • Site Selection studies for coastal development projects, i.e., harbor, resorts, aquaculture, etc.

Marine Sciences Department Facilities

The Marine and coastal sciences Department has about 8 staff members, specialists and technicians. Among the major facilities and equipment's available now in the department are:

  • Field Equipments (Probe for WQ parameters, Depth Meter, GPS, water loggers, digital camera, etc)
  • Integrated Coastal Management laboratory (ICAM) for using remotely sensed data and GIS applications. ICAM laboratory contains a computer network and workstation.
