Geological applications and Mineral Resources

The main aim of the division is to strengthen the Egyptian capacity to face natural hazards and to explore the natural resources in the Egyptian lands using integration of satellite image interpretations, topographic modeling, geophysical and geochemical analyses. To accomplish this aim, the Division of Geological Applications and Mineral Resources is collaborating with national and international institutions, governmental authorities and the private sector. Examples include: Ain Shams University, Desert Research Center, Western Michigan University, University of Southern California, New Valley Governorate, Red Sea Governorate, Beni Suef Governorate, National Authority for Potable Water and Sanitation, Hassan Allam Sons Company, New Urban Communities Authority, General Authority for Construction and Housing Cooperative and Olive Green Company for Agricultural Development

The strategy of the division is to:

  • Strengthen the utility of remote sensing and their applications in the exploration for natural resources according to the development plans of Egypt.
  • Explore the best location for groundwater extraction in the Egyptian deserts using integrated remote sensing, geoelectric and geochemical methods
  • Better understand the large-scale dynamics in the groundwater aquifers in Egypt
  • Provide technical consultations for decision makers, government and private sectors.
  • Provide a preliminary evaluation of mineral resources in the Egyptian deserts
  • Promote regional and international cooperation in the field of Geology and Geophysics
  • Develope  a reliable geological and geomorphological information data base and atlases
  • Develop an early warning geo-environmental system (earthquakes and flash flood prediction) to cover vulnerable areas in Egypt
  • Support integrated planning of the new settlements
